Candles have changed over time from being a simple source of light to an ornamental accent with a variety of purposes and advantages. Despite being used as a source of light and to illuminate human festivities for more than 5,000 years, little is known about the genesis of candles. It is frequently claimed that the first candles were created by ancient Egyptians, who used rushlights, or torches, made by immersing the pithy center of stalks in melted animal fat. However, the rushlights lacked a flame, unlike a true candle.
Candles continue to gain popularity and are increasingly used even though they are no longer the primary source of light for most people. Candles are used to celebrate, denote romance, calm the senses, define ceremonies, and accent various home decor styles. By adding light to any area without the harshness of an electric bulb, they instantly alter the atmosphere of any indoor or outdoor setting. Candlelight adds warmth and a calming atmosphere with its gentle flickering.
